Andrew
Andrew
Shadows were beginning to creep across the slope of the promontory where Andrew's remains rested at the summit.
At the witching hour, every day except Saturdays, Andrew would emerge from his mausoleum and wander around the grounds, hoping to find someone to talk to.
Mission impossible.
Yet that evening, the faint light of dusk revealed a rather strange silhouette slowly crossing the path towards the mausoleum, then moving away, following the last traces of the sun.
Andrew hurried to attract its attention. He shouted, but suddenly remembered that he no longer needed to breathe and that, without air, he could not shout either.
He quickened his pace to approach the visitor. Then he remembered that he could move instantaneously. And the moment he thought of it, he appeared right in front of the strange silhouette.
His astonishment was immense: the features he could make out in that shadowy figure were his own.
But the silhouette was even more startled. It gave a sudden jump and clung to a branch that providentially hung down from an enormous magnolia tree. Frightened by the encounter, it began to materialize until it became an exact replica of Andrew.
Andrew thought of saying something, but remembered that he could not speak. Fortunately, he also remembered that he could communicate telepathically.
"Who are you?"
A reply came through the same means:
"And who are you?"
"I live... Or rather, I'm dead here. What about you?"
"I've been sent to clean up the future. I'm Andrew, and I'm also dead and buried in the future. The future lies behind a mausoleum somewhere around here, and it takes up very little space."
"The mausoleum is mine," Andrew replied.
"I have to cut down the weeds with my scythe and let new grass grow. We've never known why the future moved here. The plot of land was taken over by noisy periods of time of every imaginable size, constantly coming and going, making it impossible to rest."
Andrew, who had only left his mausoleum in the hope of having a little chat, had just discovered that another Andrew had travelled back from the future to clear it of misunderstandings.
Now he no longer knew which of the two was himself, whether they were both the same person, or whether he was dead twice over.
He invited the other Andrew into the mausoleum and asked him to stay for dinner.
Andrew
