Fatal Blow One... two... three... The bells of the tower began to toll the final moments of the year. The medieval square lay deserted, dimly lit by only four flickering torches. Imprisoned by the pandemic, the villagers wandered through imaginary worlds in search of something that might restore their hope. Just before the final bell rang, the abbot raised his eyes to the heavens and prayed for a divine sign that would bring the plague to an end. A tiny light appeared in the distance. Slowly, it drifted closer. It was no larger than the abbot's Book of Hours . The small metallic sphere slowed to a halt only inches from his astonished face. Then a voice spoke in flawless ancient Latin. "Do not be afraid. I bring Heaven's gift. Let everyone drink from this water. It will never run dry." The abbot's face hardened.
