Fatal Blow - Golpe fatal
Fatal Blow
One... two... three...
The bells of the tower began to toll the final moments of the year.
The medieval square lay deserted, dimly lit by only four flickering torches. Imprisoned by the pandemic, the villagers wandered through imaginary worlds in search of something that might restore their hope.
Just before the final bell rang, the abbot raised his eyes to the heavens and prayed for a divine sign that would bring the plague to an end.
A tiny light appeared in the distance.
Slowly, it drifted closer.
It was no larger than the abbot's Book of Hours. The small metallic sphere slowed to a halt only inches from his astonished face.
Then a voice spoke in flawless ancient Latin.
"Do not be afraid. I bring Heaven's gift. Let everyone drink from this water. It will never run dry."
The abbot's face hardened.
Certain that he stood before one of Lucifer's temptations, he gathered all his courage and struck the strange object with a single, decisive blow.
The tiny sphere crashed onto the frozen stones.
And so Heaven's gift was lost forever.
The vaccines sent back through time never reached those they had been meant to save, and the pandemic of the twelfth century went on to wipe out more than half of humanity.
Golpe fatal
—No temas.
