Descartes and the Whole

I had always admired Descartes’ legacy: the idea of dividing a problem into parts in order to understand it better.

However, I had to live through an extraordinary experience to discover that this principle is not universally applicable.

The whole can be more than the sum of its parts.

The hybrid cyborg industry began to develop in 2030, following the revelation of the existence of alien beings and the subsequent coexistence and collaboration with them. It was they who introduced the first hybridization techniques.

Thirty years have passed since then.

The evolution of these systems, together with their growing ability to undertake increasingly complex projects, led to an exponential growth in their production and deployment across countless environments and activities on Mars.

But that is not what matters.

My brother and I founded the company in 2030.

Six months ago, he died from a strange virus.

Among his final wishes, he stated that he wanted his organs to remain alive, integrated into different humanoids produced in our own factories.

We carried out his wishes.

And then something happened that no one had anticipated.

The cyborgs that received his organs began to display behaviors that reminded us of my brother’s personality.

It did not matter which organ they had received.

All of them seemed to carry something of him.

His way of reacting.

His preferences.

Some of his gestures.

Even certain aspects of his sense of humor.

That was when I understood that perhaps Descartes had not been right about everything.

Perhaps a part is not merely a part.

Perhaps, in some way we still do not understand, each part also contains the whole.

Siempre he admirado el legado de Descartes: dividir un problema en partes para comprenderlo mejor.

Sin embargo, tuve que vivir una experiencia extraordinaria para descubrir que ese principio no es aplicable universalmente.

El todo puede ser algo más que la suma de las partes.

La industria de los ciborgs híbridos comenzó a desarrollarse en 2030, a raíz de la revelación de la existencia de seres alienígenas y de la posterior coexistencia y colaboración con ellos. Fueron ellos quienes introdujeron las primeras técnicas de hibridación.

Han transcurrido treinta años desde entonces.

La evolución de estos sistemas y su creciente capacidad para afrontar proyectos complejos provocaron un crecimiento exponencial de su fabricación y de su utilización en innumerables entornos y actividades en Marte.

Pero eso no es lo importante.

La empresa la fundamos mi hermano y yo en 2030.

Hace seis meses murió a causa de un extraño virus.

Entre sus últimas voluntades dejó escrito que deseaba que sus órganos continuaran vivos, integrados en distintos humanoides salidos de nuestras propias fábricas.

Cumplimos su voluntad.

Y entonces ocurrió algo que nadie había previsto.

Los ciborgs que recibieron sus órganos comenzaron a mostrar comportamientos que evocaban la personalidad de mi hermano.

No importaba qué órgano hubieran recibido.

Todos ellos manifestaban algo de él.

Su manera de reaccionar.

Sus preferencias.

Algunos de sus gestos.

Incluso ciertos rasgos de su humor.

Fue entonces cuando comprendí que quizá Descartes no tenía razón en todo.

Tal vez una parte no sea únicamente una parte.

Tal vez, de alguna manera que todavía no comprendemos, cada parte contenga también el todo.
