Zero Space Theory

As a telecommunications engineer specializing in cosmology, I had devoted years to developing the Zero-Space Theory, though it was never accepted by the scientific community. The heirs to Einstein’s legacy dismissed it as incompatible with the Theory of Everything.

The Zero-Space Theory maintained that the forces sustaining the existence of space itself could become unstable. When that happened, space would begin to collapse inward until it finally ceased to exist.

No one had ever managed to prove such a hypothesis.

Until one day.

While conducting laboratory experiments on the spatial properties of matter predicted by the Theory of Everything, I succeeded in isolating a family of invasive semiquarks. No particle accelerator had ever detected an anomaly of that kind. After several hours of observation, however, absolutely nothing happened.

I left the laboratory convinced that the experiment had failed.

Until that morning.

Then, in a single instant, it began.

As I sipped my morning coffee, I felt a pressure building behind my right eye. Within seconds it spread throughout my entire body.

First, very slowly, the space between the fingers of my right hand disappeared.

I tried to spread them apart, but there was no longer enough space to separate them.

That was when I understood, with horror, what was happening.

The phenomenon was not destroying my body.

It was destroying the space that contained it.

Colours gradually lost their identity. The entire spectrum collapsed into a single, unfamiliar shade. My face began to narrow. My limbs twisted like serpents, losing their rigidity as they shrank, struggling to communicate with my brain...

...but they could not.

No one believed my account.

Sometimes, when I try to separate the fingers of my right hand, I still feel that something is missing between them.

As though space itself had never fully returned.

La teoría del espacio cero

Como ingeniero de telecomunicación especializado en cosmología, había dedicado años al desarrollo de la Teoría del Espacio Cero, aunque la comunidad científica nunca la aceptó. Los herederos del pensamiento de Einstein la consideraban incompatible con la Teoría del Todo.

La Teoría del Espacio Cero sostenía que las fuerzas que hacen posible la existencia misma del espacio podían volverse inestables. Cuando eso ocurría, el espacio empezaba a cerrarse sobre sí mismo hasta desaparecer por completo.

Nadie había logrado demostrar una hipótesis semejante.

Hasta que un día.

Mientras realizaba experimentos de laboratorio sobre las propiedades espaciales de la materia previstas por la Teoría del Todo, conseguí aislar una familia de semiquarks invasivos. Ningún acelerador de partículas había detectado jamás una anomalía semejante. Sin embargo, tras varias horas de observación, no ocurrió absolutamente nada.

Abandoné el laboratorio convencido de que el experimento había fracasado.

Hasta aquella mañana.

Y entonces, en un solo instante, comenzó.

Mientras saboreaba el café de la mañana, sentí una presión detrás del ojo derecho. En cuestión de segundos se extendió por todo mi cuerpo.

Primero, muy lentamente, desapareció el espacio entre los dedos de mi mano derecha.

Intenté separarlos, pero ya no existía espacio suficiente para hacerlo.

Entonces comprendí, horrorizado, lo que estaba ocurriendo.

El fenómeno no estaba destruyendo mi cuerpo.

Estaba destruyendo el espacio que lo contenía.

Los colores fueron perdiendo su identidad. Todo el espectro se comprimió hasta convertirse en una única tonalidad desconocida. Mi rostro empezó a estrecharse. Mis extremidades serpenteaban, perdían su rigidez y se encogían, intentando comunicarse con mi cerebro...

...pero no podían.

Sobreviví.

Nadie creyó mi relato.

A veces, cuando intento separar los dedos de mi mano derecha, todavía siento que entre ellos falta algo.

Como si el espacio mismo no hubiera regresado del todo.
