Sirius
The route from Carthage to Rome: across Hispania, over the Pyrenees and through the Alps.
No matter what trials he may have to face. In his heart, he always carries the memory of his father, Hamilcar, to whom he had promised that he would destroy Rome.
Hannibal leads the march astride Sirius, an enormous elephant. Man and elephant create such a powerful image that every soldier in his army would follow them to his death. Some believe that Hannibal and Sirius are bound together by some supernatural spell.
May, 218 BC. The army sets out from Qart Hadasht, or Carthago Nova, in Hispania. In August, it crosses the Pyrenees; in September, the Rhône. In October, it leaves the Alps behind. With far fewer troops than at the beginning of the campaign, Hannibal takes the city of Turin without encountering resistance. In November, he confronts Publius Cornelius Scipio at the Ticinus...
And history continues.
Much later, when Hannibal begins his retreat from Italian lands, Sirius, the elephant that had survived the Alps and become a legend, bows before him, kneels and, with his long trunk, gently caresses his protector's hand.
Hannibal does not want to interpret the animal's gesture, or perhaps he does not know how.
Sirius lies down on his right side and dies.
With him dies the power of a myth, and in the man who had once been everything to Carthage is born the despair of his loss.
No importa a qué pruebas tenga que enfrentarse. En su corazón mantiene siempre presente a su padre, Amílcar, a quien había prometido destruir Roma.
Aníbal preside la marcha sobre un enorme elefante, Sirius. Hombre y elefante llegan a crear una imagen tan poderosa que cada uno de los hombres de su ejército los seguiría hasta la muerte. Algunos creen que Aníbal y Sirius están unidos por algún sortilegio sobrenatural.
Mayo del año 218 antes de Cristo. El ejército parte de Qart Hadasht, o Cartago Nova, en Hispania. En agosto cruza los Pirineos y en septiembre el río Ródano. En octubre deja atrás los Alpes. Con un número de efectivos muy inferior al del comienzo de la campaña, Aníbal toma la ciudad de Turín sin encontrar resistencia. En noviembre se enfrenta en Tesino a Publio Cornelio Escipión...
Y la historia continúa.
Mucho tiempo después, cuando Aníbal emprende la retirada de tierras italianas, Sirius, el elefante que había sobrevivido a los Alpes y se había convertido en leyenda, hace una reverencia ante él, se arrodilla y, con su larga trompa, acaricia la mano de su protector.
Aníbal no quiere, o no sabe, interpretar el gesto del animal.
Sirius se recuesta sobre su lado derecho y muere.
Con él muere la fuerza de un mito, y en el hombre que lo había sido todo para Cartago nace la desesperación por su pérdida.
