De quesos y ratones About cheeses and mice
Charlie the mouse woke up that morning with only one thing on his mind: cheese.
He quietly slipped out of his hiding place and, after making sure the coast was clear, made his way to the kitchen. It was deserted.
"Hmm... how wonderful," he thought.
After a difficult climb, he finally reached the cupboard, expecting to find a delicious wheel of Gruyère. Instead, he found nothing but a fruit bowl full of apples.
When the apples spotted Charlie, they were slightly startled, even though they knew he posed no threat.
"Good morning, Charlie. What brings you here?"
The mouse answered with impeccable courtesy.
"Good morning. I was wondering if you happen to know where Mr. Gruyère is. We arranged to meet for coffee."
As he spoke with the apples, Charlie glanced toward the magnificent cedar tree standing just outside the kitchen window.
On one of its branches he spotted his wife.
She looked anxious.
She kept pacing back and forth along the branch as though she were waiting for someone.
Then another mouse appeared.
And embraced her.
The apples, silent witnesses to the scene, watched Charlie with sadness. They knew the truth. Fearing that he would soon become Charlie's breakfast, Mr. Gruyère had devised the entire scheme. He had persuaded one of his friends and Charlie's wife to stage an affair.
But what had begun as a charade gradually became reality, and Charlie lost both his wife and the cheese he had set out to find.
Moral: Never underestimate your prey. Stay alert if you want to survive.
