Unrepentant Letters

Four fifty p.m., June 15, 2030. Zarzuela Palace. The Prince’s Pavilion.

A mounted emissary approaches the main entrance and requests an audience with His Majesty King Felipe VI.

Clad in metal armour, the stranger identifies himself to the Royal Guard as Don Íñigo de la Cruz y Manrique. His mission is to inform the King of a plan to bring fifteen Walloon regiments back from Flanders following the Battle of Ramillies in May 1706. The regiments are to reinforce the Bourbon forces in the War of the Spanish Succession.

Five p.m., June 15, 2030.

An enormous craft hangs motionless in the blue sky above the Prince’s Pavilion. A faint beam of light descends upon the building, passes through the roof and reaches the King’s private offices, where Felipe VI is accompanied by Don Íñigo, who has just presented his credentials.

Within the beam, two humanoid figures materialise. They identify themselves as Seth and Ra and claim to exist in the year 4024 of the terrestrial calendar.

They have come from Anti-Universe U-16, Branches 12 and 15 of the Orus System. Telepathically, they explain to the King that a shift at the intersection of the two branches caused the temporal chambers corresponding to the years 1704 to 1707 to become unsealed.

The incident released Don Íñigo, the fifteen Walloon regiments and many others from their confinement in time.

Outside, a growing commotion spills into the room: shouted orders, neighing horses, clashing metal and the thunder of hundreds of hooves across the grounds of Zarzuela Palace.

Seth and Ra telepathically ask the King for permission to return Don Íñigo and the fifteen regiments to their respective temporal chambers.

Felipe VI looks at the armoured emissary. Don Íñigo stands motionless, unable to understand why none of the other men’s lips are moving.

At last, the King gives his consent.

Don Íñigo vanishes instantly.

Outside, the neighing, the voices and the clash of weapons cease.

The tumult gives way to silence.

That night, the King could not sleep.

At seventeen minutes past three in the morning, he returned to his private offices.

A letter lay on the desk. It had not been there when Don Íñigo disappeared.

It bore his seal.

The King opened it.

The date written at the top of the page was June 16, 2030.

Cartas impenitentes

Dieciséis horas y cincuenta minutos del 15 de junio de 2030. Palacio de la Zarzuela. Pabellón del Príncipe.

Un emisario a caballo se aproxima a la entrada principal y solicita a la Guardia Real audiencia con Su Majestad el rey Felipe VI.

El personaje, ataviado con una armadura metálica, se identifica como don Íñigo de la Cruz y Manrique. Su misión consiste en informar al Rey del plan para trasladar desde Flandes hasta España, tras la batalla de Ramillies de mayo de 1706, a quince regimientos valones destinados a reforzar las tropas borbónicas en la Guerra de Sucesión.

Diecisiete horas del 15 de junio de 2030.

Una enorme nave permanece inmóvil en el cielo azul, sobre el Pabellón del Príncipe. Un tenue haz de luz se proyecta sobre el edificio, atraviesa el tejado y alcanza la zona de despachos, donde el Rey se encuentra acompañado por don Íñigo, que acaba de entregarle sus credenciales.

En el interior del haz se materializan dos figuras humanoides. Se identifican como Seth y Ra y aseguran proceder del año 4024 del calendario terrestre.

Llegados del Antiuniverso U-16, ramas 12 y 15 del sistema Orus, explican telepáticamente al Rey que una alteración en la intersección de ambos ramales provocó el desbloqueo de las estancias temporales correspondientes a los años comprendidos entre 1704 y 1707. El incidente liberó, entre otros muchos seres, al personaje que tenía ante sí y a los quince regimientos valones.

Desde el exterior, un tumulto creciente invade la estancia: voces de mando, relinchos, golpes de metal y centenares de cascos resonando sobre los terrenos de la Zarzuela.

Seth y Ra solicitan telepáticamente al Rey su autorización para devolver a don Íñigo y a los quince regimientos a sus respectivas estancias temporales.

Felipe VI contempla al caballero. Don Íñigo permanece inmóvil, sin comprender por qué los labios de ninguno de los presentes se mueven.

Finalmente, el Rey asiente.

Don Íñigo desaparece de forma instantánea.

En el exterior cesan los relinchos, las voces y el fragor de las armas.

El tumulto se convierte en silencio.

Aquella noche, el Rey no pudo dormir. 

A las tres y diecisiete de la madrugada, regresó a la zona de despachos.

Sobre la mesa permanecía una carta que no estaba allí cuando don Íñigo desapareció.

Llevaba su sello.

El Rey la abrió.

La fecha escrita en el encabezamiento era 16 de junio de 2030.
