Cuenta Arrian, el biógrafo de Alejandro Magno que:….y Alejandro le dijo a Samarcanda: ‘Te conquistaré como un enamorado conquista a su enamorada. Te colmaré de lujos y de riquezas, y tu existencia será conocida por todo el orbe, por tu belleza y por tus tesoros`.

Y Samarcanda respondió con el silencio. Porque sabía que muchos de sus habitantes morirían o serían expulsados de su seno, de sus entrañas. Como hijos suyos, el dolor infligido a ellos sería su dolor.

Samarcanda vaticinó: Por tres veces tendrás que conquistarme, porque mis hijos me adoran, incluso más que tú. Cuando recuerdo los años que he vivido y los que me quedan por vivir, lo efímero de tus conquistas me parece una macabra broma del destino, lo gratuito de un sufrimiento que no hallará consuelo ni en el mismísimo paraíso.

Te echaré de menos cuando no estés.
