It was a matter of honor.
He fired first.
He missed.
The smile of triumph on his opponent's face contrasted with the despair etched across his own.
As one of Napoleon's advisers, he should have been far from there, at Versailles, waiting to be received by the Emperor.
In an instant, his thoughts returned to the chain of events that had led to the duel.
Nothing mattered anymore.
He had never loved his wife.
It had been a marriage of convenience.
And now he was about to lose his life defending an honor he had never truly believed in.
Yet, at that very moment, he saw his wife differently.
Her tenderness.
The love she had always shown their children.
Her endless capacity for understanding.
In contrast, his own indifference.
His neglect.
His failures.
For the first time, he felt guilty.
At last, his opponent fired.
He heard the shot.
Then darkness.
Something black erased the image of his family...
of his wife.
And everything came to an end.
