The Camerlengo

We help immigrants find employment. Many factors have to be taken into account: their country of origin, education, age, and family situation.

Today I am handling the case of an elderly man who cannot read or write. He speaks a language I do not recognize, and I cannot even identify what part of the world it comes from. The old man gestures toward a sheet of paper and a pencil, then begins to draw a dome.

Suddenly, the Swiss Guard arrives at the office. They explain that the old man is the Camerlengo in disguise. He has devoted himself so completely to helping immigrants that, in the end, he has lost his grip on reality and has come to believe that he is one of them.

El camarlengo

Nos dedicamos a encontrar puestos de trabajo a inmigrantes. Hay que tener en cuenta muchos factores: origen, formación, edad, situación familiar…
Hoy he llevado el caso de un anciano que no sabe leer ni escribir. Se expresa en un idioma que no conozco ni tampoco puedo identificar la región del planeta en la que lo hablan. El anciano  ha señalado un papel y un lápiz y ha empezado a dibujar una cúpula.

De repente se han presentado en el despacho la guardia suiza. Me han explicado que se trata del camarlengo disfrazado. Se ha dedicado con tanto afán a ayudar a los inmigrantes que al final ha perdido la cabeza y se ha creído que es uno de ellos.

Though it lingers longer than a flicker, even eternity must come to an end when the sparks awaken and see that eternity is merely memory’s invention. And then—beyond eternity— comes the eternal now. Time does not flow, for it does not exist. Only the eternal present remains, with no beginning, and no end.   Chispitas de luz Cada uno de nosotros es una chispita de luz. Dura un instante, pero es un instante fabuloso. Aunque dura un poco más que una chispita, la eternidad también agota su tiempo, desaparece cuando las chispitas de luz se dan cuenta de que la eternidad es un invento de la memoria. Y entonces, después de la eternidad viene el eterno presente. El tiempo no fluye, porque no existe. Lo que existe es el eterno presente. Y el eterno presente no tiene fin ni tampoco un principio.
