El extraordinario caso de Filippo The Extraordinary Case of Filippo

—No.

Y me abrazó.

The Extraordinary Case of Filippo

I went away on holiday for a few days and left my cat Filippo, a beautiful black feline, in the care of my neighbour. He had been given to me only a few months earlier, and I couldn't have wished for a better companion.

When I returned, I went to pick him up.

I rang the doorbell.

No one answered.

So I asked the building's caretaker.

"An ambulance came a few days ago," he said. "Your neighbour was taken to hospital."

"Do you know what happened?"

"Not really. I only know it had something to do with a cat... a black cat."

"My God! What about the cat?"

"I think the animal protection service took him."

I tried to reassure myself by remembering that cats always seem to survive whatever happens.

Even so, I couldn't stop thinking that Filippo might somehow have injured my neighbour.

I went straight to the animal shelter.

An employee handed Filippo back to me in a carrier but couldn't explain why he had been brought there.

Once home, I opened the carrier.

At first glance, he looked perfectly normal.

But when I tried to bathe him, he greeted me with a hiss and unsheathed his claws.

That's when I noticed it.

There were dried traces of something red beneath them.

Certain that the worst had happened, I hurried to the hospital.

They showed me to my neighbour's room.

I walked in expecting her to throw me out.

Instead, she smiled beneath her bandages, motioned me closer...

and hugged me.

Then she told me everything.

A burglar had broken into her home.

She fought back.

The man struck her brutally across the face.

Without hesitating, Filippo leapt at him.

His claws tore into the burglar's face so fiercely that he abandoned the robbery and fled.

Filippo was a hero.
